At one point, Valley Forge was the 4th largest city in America.  During the Revolutionary War, General Washington stationed his army, their families, and the army's resources here outside of Philadelphia.  The location was strategic and allowed Washington to be close to the British Army, but not too close.  The winter that the army experienced here was one of the most brutal experiences of the entire war.
